My 3 New Hong Kong Foodie Hits

     As Filipinos food accompanies and punctuates each special event in our lives. Our recent Hong Kong trip was no exception of course.Our trip was short but sweet but filled with wonderful new memories. Some of those memories are about you guessed it  - food. I want to share with you three not new munching discoveries. Please ignore if you know them already.)

1. Callbee Hot & Spicy

     My cousins and I were meeting for lunch on our second day in HK and the others were running late. My Ate Amy was munching on this and shared the pack to everyone. 

     The next day I was at the Wellcome supermarket near our hotel and looking for it. they did not have it so I ended up buying their other flavored chips which are all good. Luckily I found Hot & Spicy at the airport 7/11.

2. Tim Ho Wan's Pork Buns

      It was also our first time to try the baked Pork Buns at Tim Ho Wan. Yummy! Each order is three pieces. Tim Ho Wan has been called the best hole in the wall in the world. I get why. I shall go back there and bring my little troop next time.

3. Jenny Bakery's Homemade Butter Cookies 

    The Jenny Bakery in Hong Kong is best known for their cookies. I have been always lucky my cousin, N has given us a tin for the past two times we have been to Hong Kong. Jenny Bakery's homemade butter cookies are so sinfully addicting! Each day in their stores the cookies are gone by around noon taken away by a long queue.

 

      Plus they come in oh so pretty teddy bear tins.

     I can't wait to get my hands and mouth on these, my three new HK faves. Trust me, they are all delish!

Lots of Lovah and Pavlova: An HK House Tour

     I was in Hong Kong for three days with family this week. Though this is not my shortest stay in the former British colony, this trip has given me the worst hangover since the Disney trip I shared with H and the kids years ago. This is probably because I had so much fun; bonding with my cousins, bullying Doro and getting fat. But all the fun was not the sole purpose of the trip it was to be a huge send-off party for my cousin, N who was migrating with his partner to another country. They will be farther away and the mere  thought of the longer distance is enough to spark a bittersweet last hurrah Hong Kong sojourn amongst us, crazy cousins.

     One of the highlights of the trip for me was visiting my cousin's Hong Kong flat. It gave me glimpse of the life they have had in HK. It was as if to celebrate and share with us all that has been and will be...

     I was told the set-up was just for the evening for parteh! 

     First thing that caught my eye though were these Marimekko paper napkins. My cousin N said he remembered me when he bought them. Kilig! THAT'S IT! I will buy some for myself next time. haha!
 

     The flat is a fun mix of bold beautiful art, travel finds and Ikea! OMG! My fave combination!

These were just the appetizers. Luckily I forgot to eat lunch. Wink!

THE FOOD! These tasted much better than they look. Trust me!

   That night I died and went to pavlova heaven!

      The next day, people kept telling me how drunk I was at the party. Why? Was the drink spiked? I don't drink you know.

Hong Kong October 2012 According to my iPhone Pics

     Spending Halloween in Hong Kong has slowly become a family tradition. My parents, siblings and I agree it is less stressful to travel this time as opposed to the after Christmas trips we used to go on together. Maybe the fact that all of us are married now and have families to take care of, in-laws to spend time with and holiday obligations to fulfill on our own made the trip a bit more complicated.

    In as much as the whole scenario has changed for us from Santa and Christmas trees to witches and pumpkins. It becomes even more different once I checked my iPhone photos. You totally take different photos on your phone; a view of your trip that is more on the micro side of it. I find the pics interesting and cute. Some of these are of those...OOOhhh, I have to take a pic of this quick moments. Allow me to share these pics here. It is Hong Kong according to my iPhone pics.....

THE MAJESTY OF ALL UNDER HEAVEN

     "Every time we are in a different place we should visit at least one museum."

     My mom said this as we were on our way to the Hong Kong Museum of History and my nephew, Bullet did not want to go. Like any teen-ager, he wanted to use our last day in Hong Kong to what else -SHOP! I, on the other hand was silently excited. I did no want to be the uncool aunt. Hehe! I love museums!(even the boring ones give me solace)


     What was up at the Hong Kong Museum of History anyway? No less than the THE MAJESTY OF ALL UNDER HEAVEN featuring the famous terracotta warriors from the Qin Dynasty!!!!

     How lucky can we get to be in Hong Kong?  It is one of the best exhibits I have visited! I am glad my mom insisted we go.   For 10HK$, I would go again if I could.

     We especially enjoyed the 3D screens where we looked like we were actually in ancient China and rubboing elbows with the terracotta warriors and cranes...and earth shakes....Great Fun!

     This display shows the actual colors of the terracotta warriors then.....

     But this was the best part of the exhibit for me.....It was like actually being there during the construction of the terracotta army pits to their destruction and burning of the pits by the soldiers of Xiang Yu. ... I just had to steal that moment to pretend I was Zhang Ziyi and run through the excavations to which my kids yelled a loud, "MOM!!!!!!".... Oh, well! Look at these....simply wow!
    

Then we were in the clouds....

     There were also interactive fun stuff where you get to color your own soldier....

     Then we entered the actual exhibit....

     English and Chinese digital literature to help you understand and enjoy it more....It was fascinating! 

     Plus they had a museum coffee shop that served really good food....

     What we did not expect was that H was going to meet his ancestor face to face....Looks familiar?

The magic of technology....FUN and funny!

     If you will be in Hong Kong soon. DO try to catch this exhibit. It runs up to the 26th of November. Just when I  thought I've had enough of Chinese culture, it gets interesting again.....Now where is our Mulan DVD.....Who is the girl I see? Staring back right at me.....
