Mommy Matters: Lessons Learned

A friend of mine, let's call her Mommy Matters is not an over-acting, over-protective mother to her son and daughter. No, she is not. She told me about an incident though that has deeply wounded her as a mother.

Several months ago, her kids were invited to participate in a big school production of her high school class homecoming. Her kids both play the violin. The piece was simple enough and her kids were ready even before the first rehearsal. They were to play with other kids of her classmates. For some reason only one more kid and Mommy Matters' kids could get the piece. Anyway, pressure was building as show date neared and a classmate of Mommy Matters, Wendy who had so willingly given her time to the production was at the helm of the kids' little number as well and all of a sudden picking on Mommy Matters kids during practice. Why pick on them when they knew the piece already? She even went to the point of insulting Mommy Matters' daughter in front of the other kids.

When Mommy Matters got home from rehearsals that night her kids who went home earlier were fast asleep. She found out from her husband that the kids came home very upset; the boy wanted to punch someone and the girl was in tears over the badgering they got from Tita Wendy. She did mot know what to do nor want to do anything at that point. She just wanted to know the whole story and not react right away because in reality she was mad as hell.

The next morning, she calls up her mom to tell her about it. When Mommy Matters heard her mom's voice over the phone, she started to cry. Mommy Matters' mom was furious. Her mom reminded her that this classmate of hers has never been the nicest person to her and she allowed her to treat her like that for the longest time. (she did mot give me why or details.) Her mom then told her this time to stand up for her kids. Wendy has gone too far.

So my friend informed the head of their homecoming production that her kids were no longer participating. That very same day she goes to practice and of all people was welcomed with a hands up gesture from Wendy saying, " I was kind. I swear I was kind." No apologies, a denial even.

Before that Mommy Matters tried to approach their other classmates who were leading the production actually just to reach out and for her kids to be understood. She was surprised when she got reactions like 'it was just nerves' and ' No, Wendy did not do that.' Meaning her kids were liars?

Mommy Matters danced her heart out at her homecoming production. She almost didn't show up at all. At the end of the show when everyone was elated, happy and in tears, my friend was also in tears. She cried her heart out for her kids and her family who had to be hurt by all this.  She cried for how touched she was with the love she felt from her closest peers of 25 or so years who were happy, mad and sad with her at that one crazy same time.

She stood up for her kids. Was that bad? She showed them not to let people get away with treating them the wrong way. Is that wrong? At the same time her kids learned that grown-ups can be so wrong and lie sometimes. That is the real world for them, right? My friend learned more deeply who her true friends are, those who cared and believed her young children's story, who listened to her, fought with her cried with her. Such a gift.

Many lessons learned indeed. Even in our forties, people around us can still change because people change. Sometimes we need to let go. My friend decided to shy away from anything of her high school class for now.

My friend is a lot of things like an alumna of her beloved Alma Matter but at that very time when her kids needed her most, she had to be the best mother she could be.

Every opportunity to teach a valuable lesson to our children is God teaching you to do so and we, as parents need to grab it. Every opportunity God shields us from those that have been hurting us, God is saying. enough.

As for forgiveness? We did not talk about that. I know she has but not forgetting is not 'not forgetting' rather a decision to just stay away.

How was YOUR Week?

I openly complained through my facebook status recently how lonely it is for me to be without a job site. All my projects are either in the bidding stage, mobilization stage prior to actual construction or schematic design stage. leaving me job site- less. Before my mind even wonders about how to compare my current professional state to cliches like a jeepney without a driver or a captain without a ship, I would rather wonder about how the week went and did I live it well?

My friend and art teacher, Toots is insisting that our class is ready for a show. (Chattering teeth!)  I consider my Saturday art class one of my happy places but the idea of a show is not exactly daunting but HOW? In all trust and faith I look to Toots. Lead the way.....

The photo above is my first struggling attempt at show worthy skill, I want to call them shoescapes. It looks better than it really is. I am doing this over....for the 5th time!

That same Saturday, the kids and I finally got to back Homemade Oreo Cookies and they were yummy and so easy to make. =-) Click here for the recipe.

One of my goals this year is to start cooking again, I have so been out of the kitchen. I did not know where to start? Taking many steps back, I went all the way back to cooking school....and I was back in the kitchen of my teacher Chef Dorothy Ferreria. Dorothy is a generous teacher, She shares all her secrets with her students. ALL! If you are interested in her classes even for your kids this summer. Look here.

We learned to cook Spanish Bacalao and other Lenten dishes. They were all so yummy!

I told myself I will not attend another cooking class unless I try to cook two recipes from the previous class by myself.,,,,Haha! good luck!

Before long it was Friday and Blue is done with exams and we all turned to his school driveway to be greeted with this glorious sunlight and the heavenly Jesuit music on the background.

HOORAY FOR THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!

I just got back from Worldbex. It was an interesting show this year. I am excited about some new products. My fave booths are those of UST and UP.

UP ID Booth

This oh-so inviting bed reminds me how exhausted i am...Yep, it is 5 in the afternoon on a Friday as I write this and I want to end this week already and sleep early.

And tomorrow.....is a brand new week. Who says Saturdays are the end of the week?

Saturdays are my beginnings....Good night, to a week well-spent! =-)

Here & Now

I have said this before and I am going to say it again. Being a parent is crazy bittersweet. Just this morning over breakfast H and I realized that we have been shuttling our kids to and from school and our home for the past nine years. Wow,  how can that be nine years already so fast? In a matter of months or hopefully years, Blue will no longer let me hug him and riddle his face with kisses anymore. I will be left with overstuffed photo boxes and memory cards to remember.

As time speeds away, I just teach and remind myself to focus on the here and now - and all that is here and now even the most ordinary, mundane little things. Each one is connected by timeline to the other to make up the gifts I enjoy today.

In two weeks Yellow will be graduating from grade school and the face that will look back at me on this car mirror will be that of a high school student come June.

The number 4 patch on this polo will be changed to number 5.

It is that time of the year again to pack the used text books and school stuff and clean out the kids' room in preparation for the summer ahead. Gotta get boxes! Need to check on swim suits, our supply of sunblock and while I am at it decide on which classes the kids will be taking.

Blue's room is a zoo.
We plan to spend a substantial amount of time with my parents too. I mean who can resist being away from this pool? Not to mention my mom's cooking?

Seemingly simple, regular milestones and events still bittersweet.....How do we parents actually cope?

 We work...
(Yes, work come to think of it is actually not only a means but also a distraction)

Aiming for at least two turnovers...Woot!

We complain about the traffic among other things....(Thanks to the Corona Impeachment Trial aired on the radio, traffic has become more bearable.)

We drink a lot of coffee....(need to focus)

Drown ourselves in take-out breakfasts.....
(since we are always in a rush)

.......and in my case drown myself more in Thai movies on Youtube....

P' Shone!!!

....and deep in our hearts wish that it will never end.......=-)

Home Visit: And Baby Makes Bliss

A good friend of mine became a mom lately and I have never seen a more radiant, happy mother than her. Her joy is reflected throughout her cozy home. I have enjoyed paying her home visits. We shared mami (noodle soup)and siopao (steamed buns) one time before she gave birth and most recently I discovered that Pan De Manila has good banana bread. Thanks to her! Irregardless of the occasion, her home is as true, as welcoming and as sincere as she is.

Like a over-aged Nancy Drew, I stole some snapshots around her apartment, things that make it distinctly her and every inch a home. With her permission and my current obsession with Instagram, (Thanks to Chinggay!) I am sharing them. =-)

Isn't it lovely?

But here is my favorite...

I think I might just drop by again soon...=-)

Single Parenting Weekend

Whenever H would be out of town before,  I would totally shut myself out of the outside world and concentrate on work and being both mom and dad for a while.  After some time though and after turning down so many tempting invites, I made a conscious decision to okay, give into some.

The weekend before last was one such weekend and I am glad I did what I did. Since you, guys sent me such sweet messages about my last post the other weekend, I decided to fill you in on another one. =-) Is it okay?

Friday 9-19-11

Friday afternoon at 5 was when my weekend actually began. I was meeting up with friends from design school who were working on their exhibit. I wanted to take a peek and say hello. They are my former batch mates after all. Mommy-hood and architecture-hood made me go lighter on my school load and delayed me by a year. Itchokay!

I was with our Ethics teacher who is younger than me (and cuter) and the minute we entered the exhibit hall which was already in crazy construction mode, I was every one's Tita (aunt and actually mommy to some) again and a proud one.

Please do visit their exhibit when it opens October 1st at SM North Edsa, okay?

No, this job site is not spared from  the funnies! haha!

We had dinner with some of them after. Gosh, I am so gonna miss them all over again after tonight.

This is gossip central, turbo-blasted. Haha!

The one on the left is our teacher.....Pechay has a microphone pa.

Saturday 9-20-11

Saturday morning found me sleepy but excited for collage class. This is our second round of art classes and I don't want them to end. I was looking forward to going a bit quirky and almost Hallmark-y with my current piece but Teacher Toots will not hear of it. Teehee!

That afternoon was pleasantly free so I stayed in my room and read.....the afternoon away.

My two besties friends that day. Thanks for the book, Ms. Ge!
Yes, I am into K-Pop. Will tell you about it soon. =-)

That night I could not sleep I began sorting out things in one of my closets and it was freaking me out to leave it like this....

So between 'facebooking' and actually organizing stuff I finished this...dawn the next day....YAAAAAAWn!

Sob, sob, sob! So many more closets to go.....

Sunday 9-21-11

The kids were joining the Temple Hill Children's Choir in playing music for the 9 am mass at the chapel in White Plains. So it was another early start for us. Yaaaaaawn!

My two kids play the violin.  Guess which ones they are.
I don't know what it is but every time they play for church, we all get super hungry after. I will post about the place soon. It is another wonderful 'northern' find, Stacy's.

The last leg of the weekend found us at home again. I am on term break after all and had nothing to do. Yellow got busy baking in the kitchen and I got busy figuring out (with Blue's help) H's new coffee contraption......Hala!

The perfect end to a perfect single parenting weekend. =-)))

What's in My Daily Mommy Survival Kit?

It's 2:36 in the morning and I have beaten the alarm clock again. Some mornings though I am not that early a riser and I am grateful for my in-house wake-up call.
After it sounds it's first alarm, our day's story begins. Will it be an action packed morning? A mellow dramatic one? During school days though it is never a comedy. I wish otherwise ...=-(...Let the day begin.
Here are the other things that help me maintain my sanity. (and decrease the incidence of major outbursts here and there) As a working+student+mom, it can be easy to lose your marbles so to speak.

In my work as an architect, exact measurements are a key element. I have loved and lost too many measuring tapes. Recently, some have managed to all find their way home. So now I have an entire bowl of them. I never have to look for one anymore.
Pencils, ball pens, markers....How ideal to have them all in their respective containers. In my complex household of kids and helps, it becomes close to the can-I-just-pull-my-hair-coz-I'm-pissed level of frustration. Hence the just-dump-it-all-here pen holder. I have a 6 inch by 6 inch square glass vase for this.
I bought this stamp set during our last trip to the States. I get to play teacher to the kids and give them pats on the back for good work. They need it constantly.
Sweet perks. Nothing like sugar to raise and exhausted me's spirit.
Thank God for Lego. My kids' imagination continues to soar and their childhood prolonged.
These clips put together anything and everything. Bills, receipts, school circulars.
Okay, okay I need to replace them but my reading glasses and its packaging tape first aid is still a big help.
Lastly, I am never alone. What's hard becomes easy. What's crazy, at the end of the day makes perfect, poetic sense. =-D
How about you? What's in your own survival kit?
